Beckett (BGS) Grading for Canadian Collectors
By Nathan Wiebe, CPA — collector, and a buyer and seller of cards. Published September 23, 2026.
Beckett Grading Services (BGS) has no Canadian drop-off — Canadians mail cards directly to Beckett's headquarters in Plano, Texas. What sets Beckett apart from PSA, SGC and CGC is printed subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface, on a half-point 1–10 scale, with a rare "Black Label" reserved for a perfect 10 across all four. As of this writing, Beckett is running a temporary submission process while it rebuilds its online system — worth knowing before you plan a submission.
Does Beckett Grade Cards in Canada?
No. Of the four major US graders, PSA is the only one with a Canadian receiving centre — in Mississauga, Ontario. Beckett, SGC and CGC all still require a direct cross-border submission. Beckett's own site directs submitters to mail cards, with a printed copy of the submission paperwork, straight to its headquarters: Beckett, 2700 Summit Ave., Suite 100, Plano, TX 75074. In-person drop-off and pickup exist, but only at that Plano location and only by appointment — not a realistic option from Canada.
What Makes Beckett Different: Subgrades and the Half-Point Scale
Beckett is the only one of the four major graders that prints four separate subgrades on every certification label: centering, corners, edges, and surface, each scored out of 10. The overall grade you see on the front of the slab isn't a simple average of the four — a weak subgrade in one area caps how high the overall number can go, which is why collectors who care about a card's specific condition often check the subgrades directly rather than just the headline number. Beckett also grades on a half-point scale, so a card that just misses a 10 can come back a 9.5 rather than dropping straight to a 9.
Black Label — Beckett's Rarest Grade
A Black Label is a Beckett 10 (Pristine) where all four subgrades — centering, corners, edges, and surface — are also perfect 10s. It's the rarest grade Beckett issues: the corners and edges have to hold up under close inspection, the surface has to be free of print spots or scratches, and centering has to sit close to even on both the front and back of the card. A standard 10 can still carry a subgrade or two below perfect; a Black Label can't. Most Beckett 10s are not Black Labels.
How to Submit to Beckett From Canada Right Now
Beckett is currently taking submissions through a temporary online form rather than its usual account system, while it works on its main site. Base (with subgrades), Standard, and Express service tiers are available through that form; Beckett has said this could change if demand or backlog grows faster than it can keep up with posted turnaround estimates. The process: fill out the temporary form, then mail your cards with a copy of the submission paperwork to the Plano, Texas address above. Payment isn't collected through the form itself — Beckett reviews what arrives, confirms the final total, and emails a link to pay once your submission is logged. For a Canadian, that's the same cross-border shipping and potential customs exposure as any US-bound grading submission (see our grading companies comparison for how that compares to PSA's Mississauga route), with no Canadian leg to shorten the trip.
What It Costs and How Long It Takes
Beckett has stated that pricing and posted turnaround times for its Base and Standard tiers are unchanged during the current temporary-submission period — but turnaround estimates are explicitly described as not guaranteed while demand and backlog are worked through. As with every grader, the only number worth trusting is the one on the grader's own site the day you submit. Our grading companies comparison links straight to Beckett's current pricing rather than quoting a figure here that could already be stale.
Beckett vs the Other Graders
Beckett isn't objectively better or worse than PSA, SGC, or CGC — it's different in ways that matter for different cards. The four printed subgrades are a real advantage if you want to document exactly why a card graded the way it did, which matters most for modern cards where centering and surface issues are common. PSA still carries the strongest resale premium for modern star and rookie cards and now has a Canadian receiving centre that shortens the round trip. SGC and CGC are the other two major US graders without a Canadian drop-off — see our SGC and CGC grading guide for how those two compare to Beckett specifically. Our full card grading companies comparison covers all four side by side, including the Canadian-based alternatives that skip the border entirely. And before picking a grader at all, our card grading 101 guide covers whether a specific card is worth grading in the first place.
